Emiliano Zapata is one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican revolution. Zapata stood up for the peasants of the south, against the upper class that exploited poor laborers. The charro version of Robin Hood fought for equality, where the extra land of the bourgeois would be redistributed to the poor, so everyone would have a fair opportunity. Additionally, Zapata also believed in gender equality. During his revolutionary days, he would welcome women to fight by his side. Zapata’s beliefs are still alive in the southern region of Mexico. A modern revolutionary group, the Zapatistas, are still quite active against globalization, unfair treatment, and the lack of recognition of the native people’s rights.
