El Indio Fernandez is considered to be the most important entity from the Mexican Film Industry. His interest in the Mexican culture was nurtured by the Mexican revolution and by the fact that he was born from a Caucasian father and an Indian mother.
He embraced his heritage and projected it behind the cameras. As a director, he defended the Mexican culture sovereignty over the foreign misinterpretations, as as seen in his directed film, Mar?a Candelaria (Xochimilco), where he tried to portray the picturesque Mexican folklore. This movie made him win the Palme d’Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival.
Also, the legends says that he was the model for the Academy Oscar statuette. Therefore although V?r already has 14 Cannes Lions, he lacked an Oscar but rather to win it he preferred make one out of his own rubikubist style; El Indio.
