Description

The technique with which this work was created is called SUMINAGASHI.

SUMINAGASHI is an old Japanese paper print, a monotopy. To print a Suminagshi, the motif is first applied to the surface of the water and transfered to the paper by placing it on it. The water surface is constantly moving. Therefore the motif is constantly changing and the prints are the documentation of unique moment.

The exact origin of this technique ist unclear. It is belived that it dates from the 10th century. For over 400 years it was only allowed to be used by the upper class in Japan. In the 17th century this unique technology came to Europe. Annette Mewes-Thoms is looking for a new, modern type of Suminagshi and has been experimenting with different types of modern colors and papers since several years.

Because of the danger that humanity could be greatly reduced by viruses, she deals with the silence of the landscape.
