Description

SUMINAGASHI on paper. The work is signed lower right.

The technique with which this work was created is called SUMINAGASHI.

SUMINAGASHI is an old Japanese paper print, a monotype. To print a Suminagshi, the motif is first painted on the water surface. With a sheet of paper, it is removed from the water surface. Since the surface of the water is constantly changing, the motif constantly changes its appearance. A Suminagashi is always the documentation of a unique moment.

The exact origin of this technique is unclear. It is believed that it dates from the 10th century. For over 400 years it was only allowed to be used by the upper class in Japan. This unique technology came to Europe in the 17th century.

Annette Mewes-Thoms is looking for a new, modern type of Suminagshi and has been experimenting with different types of modern colors and papers for several years.

Because of the risk that humanity could be greatly reduced by viruses, she is currently dealing with the silence of the landscape.
